According to Rolling Stone, Leiber and Stoller's "theme song for Presley's third movie was decidedly silly, the kind of tongue-in-cheek goof they had come up with for The Coasters. Presley, however, sang it as straight rock & roll, overlooking the jokes in the lyrics (like the suggestion of gay romance when inmate Number 47 tells Number 3, 'You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see') and then introducing Scotty Moore's guitar solo with a cry so intense that the take almost collapses."[2] Gender studies scholars cite the song for "its famous reference to homoerotics behind bars,"[3] while music critic Garry Mulholland writes, "'Jailhouse Rock' was always a queer lyric, in both senses."[4] Douglas Brode writes of the filmed production number that it's "amazing that the sequence passed by the censors".[5]
Jailhouse Rock
Before production began, rock-and-roll songwriting partners Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were commissioned to create the film's soundtrack, but they did not send any material to MGM for months. In April 1957, the studio summoned the writers to New York and Jean Aberbach, director of the Hill & Range music publishing company, confronted them demanding to see the songs. When told that there was no material, Aberbach locked the songwriters in their hotel room and would not allow them to leave until they had written songs. Four hours later, Leiber and Stoller had written "I Want to Be Free", "Treat Me Nice", "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care", and "Jailhouse Rock."[30]
Parents need to know that Jailhouse Rock is the iconic Elvis Presley movie from 1957 that introduced Hollywood to rock-and-roll musicals. The story's about a man sent to prison for manslaughter, and there are several fight scenes that show punching. One shows a small amount of blood on the mouth. There are a few kisses. "Hell" is used once. Adults frequently drink at parties and in bars, and there's lots of background smoking.

It often has been reported incorrectly that Elvis was the choreographer for the big 'Jailhouse Rock' production number in this film. Alex Romero was the choreographer for the film, but Elvis' own natural moves were Romero's inspiration. Mr. Romero had designed the production number for the song 'Jailhouse Rock' . Then, when Elvis tried the Fred Astaire type of steps that has been planned, they found that it wasn't going to work. So, Mr. Romero asked Elvis to perform several songs as if he were on stage. After watching Elvis perform 'Hound Dog', 'Don't Be Cruel' and 'All Shook Up', Mr. Romero announced 'I got it. See you later, Elvis'. and then explained that he was going home to work out a routine using Elvis' natural movements. The next day, they worked their way through to create the now-classic 'Jailhouse Rock' production number, one of pop/rock music's greatest and most iconic moments on film, a performance considered by many to be ahead of its time and the father of modern-day music videos. Mr. Romero was also the choreographer for the movie 'Clambake'.

Jailhouse Rock (1957) is a prison-related, rags-to-riches musical-drama (and biopic parable of a predictable downfall and recovery) from director Richard Thorpe. It was the most influential black-and-white rock musical until the Beatles' A Hard Day's Night (1964) in the next decade. The screenplay by Guy Trosper was developed from a story written by blacklisted Nedrick Young, who would be lauded with an Academy Award for Best Screenplay for The Defiant Ones (1958) and nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for Inherit the Wind (1960). 2ff7e9595c
