A couple of machines running Office 365 ProPlus (Office 2016) suddenly ask to be activated by internet. And the response is "We couldn't contact the server 0x80072efe". Searching reveals a lot of activation problem, but not so much with this number. Tried about everything, like the Time service, disable anti-virus, disable Windows firewall, ran the troubleshoot-app, re-installed the package. No deal. As a last resort, I connected one of the offended pc directly to the internet. And voila, Office activated immediately. So it looks like the activation is blocked by our Sonicwall UTM device. Checked it's log but it doesn't reveal activation-attempts, so I wonder what ports / addresses the activation process uses? Or is there something else blocking the activation?
In a previous post, we covered how to upgrade Office 365 2013 to Office 365 2016. We came across an issue after the upgrade is completed. Once you start any Office application, Office 365 2016 ask for activation, which will fail if attempted and then ask for repair. This can be quite confusing for user.

This document shows how to convert Microsoft Office 2013, Microsoft Office 2016, or Microsoft Office 2019 to and from KMS activation and MAK activation, as well as help determine which activation type is currently in use. These activations are available for faculty and staff using departmental machines. Please note that only Office Pro Plus can use KMS or MAK activation. Other editions are not compatible.
As far as I know, no official documentation exists on the matter. However more than a handful of people in the Citrix community, including myself, has confirmed that doing a hybrid azure AD join fixes the activation issue with Office 365.The issue is with WS2019 ONLY, that's why you probably haven't had issues with 2016.
And that is exactly where this article comes in. Here you find a comprehensive overview of all possible solutions on one page (including referrals to the original sources). In case I find other ways how to deal with the office activation problem in the future, I will update this article accordingly.
Hi Alan. It is possible to prevent the activation screen from popping up by removing a registry key ( -us/office/office-repeatedly-prompts-you-to-activate-on-a-new-pc-a9a6b05f-f6ce-4d1f-8d49-eb5007b64ba1). Does this help you with your issue?
Note: Remember with every major release version change of operating systems (2003 & 2003 R2, 2008 & 2008 R2, 2012 & 2012 R2, 2016, and now 2019) in addition to the basic server licensing, corresponding user CALs (Client Access Licenses) are required to go along with them.
You can check if Microsoft Office 2019 has been successfully activated by going to File > Account. The activation status of the program is visible under the heading "Product Information". If is displayed the "Product Activated", it means that you have a valid licensed copy of Microsoft Office.
Note: If you have Office 365/2016 subscription on your old PC, you need to deactivate the subscription first, then transfer Microsoft Office to a new device, and reactivate it. If your Office is a non-subscription version, skip the deactivation steps.

Once you have installed Microsoft Office 2016 / 2019 / 2021, you can validate that your license has been activated by following these steps:(Note: The screen shots below were taken in MS Office Word, but the process is similar in all Office programs.)
Search Add or remove programs on your computer and open it. This will open Apps & features.
From the displayed list, select Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 or Microsoft Office Professional 2019.
Select Uninstall.
A message will appear asking if you are sure you want to remove Office 2016 or Office 2019, click Yes.
Once it has finished uninstalling, restart your computer.
After restarting, search Software Center on your computer and open it.
Select Microsoft Office LTSC 2021.
Click Install.
Once it has finished installing, launch Word.
Your computer should now be set up with Office 2021 LTSC.

Mustapha says:January 11 2023 10 to 08 h minHello,we have workstations that had M365 Web App with users who have E3 licenses. we deleted this version via the control panel and installed a 2021 Pro version by changing the user licenses from E3 to E1. it works in most cases but for some, we have errors, the desktop applications become M365 Web App again and block the user (because E1), we have to reinstall Office 2021 pro again. Is the problem similar to your tutorial?pleaseReplyCamille says:December 22 2022 to 17 47 h minHello,Thank you for the procedure (3)The problem being that Office 365 was previously installed and following uninstallation by the program panel then installation of Office Pro 2021 resulting in 2 keys (Office365 + Office Pro 2021) knowing that that of Office 365 was deactivated but still present it seems that when launching Word (or others) the wrong key was sometimes used, hence the random activation requestI used procedure 3The script has erased the 2 keys and then reactivated with the valid keyFor now it's okMany thanks to you Soufiane and happy holidaysReplySoufiane Sabiri says:December 22 2022 to 19 04 h minHello Camille,Thank you for your informative comment.
